As today marks the 79th anniversary of the Quit India Movement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to pay tribute to those who took part in the movement, PM Modi said the movement energised the youth of our nation and the spirit of it echoed across the country. 

He tweeted, “Tributes to the greats who took part in the Quit India Movement, which played a crucial role in strengthening the fight against colonialism. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, the spirit of the Quit India movement reverberated across India and energised the youth of our nation.”

The Quit India Movement was led by Gandhi that brought people from all across the country together to uproot imperialism and fight for freedom from the British. It was on this day that the call of “Do or Die” was given to all Indians. It began from Gawaria Tank in Mumbai. 

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu also greeted the nation on the eve of the Quit India Movement day. “I convey my warm greetings and best wishes to all our citizens on the anniversary of Quit India Movement Day. The movement started with Gandhiji exhorting the countrymen with his powerful slogan, ”do or die” which infused new energy into our independence movement and eventually forced the British to leave India in 1947,” the Vice President said.

“On this occasion, let us remember the countless sacrifices made by the brave people of India who participated in the Quit India Movement to free India from colonial rule. Let us also dedicate ourselves to eradicate poverty, illiteracy, inequality, corruption, and social evils like casteism, communalism, and gender discrimination from India,” he continued.

The Vice President concluded, “We must remember that despite all the differences in the way we dress, the language we speak, or the religion we practise, we are all Indians first and we should be proud of that.”
