The states of Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh along with several other states celebrated their foundation day on Sunday,  wishes poured in from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and the respective chief ministers of the states on the occasion.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished citizens of Karnataka on the occasion and tweeted, “Karnataka Rajyotsava greetings to my sisters and brothers of Karnataka. Powered by the strength and skills of the people of the state, Karnataka is scaling new heights of progress. I pray for the happiness and good health of the people of Karnataka.”

In Karnataka, the foundation day is listed as a government holiday and is known by several names such as the ‘Karnataka Rajyotsava Day’ and ‘Kannada Day’. 

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on the occasion of the 65th Kannada Rajyotsavam also wished all Kannadigas across the country. 

The 77-year-old also offered a floral tribute to Goddess Bhuvnaneswari at his residence, and asked citizens of Karnataka to unite in protection of the Kannada language and culture.

The state of Karnataka was formed on November 1, 1956, when all Kannada speaking regions of South India merged to create the state.

The President of India Ram Nath Kovind also wished citizens across the country celebrating the foundation day of their respective states and wished that each and every state and union territory can be an example of peace and prosperity. 

He wrote, “Warm wishes to the people of Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Lakshadweep and Puducherry on formation day. Let each state/union territory be an exemplar of peace and prosperity to make the country proud.”

The Prime Minister also wished the state of Kerala, often referred to as “God’s own country,” on the occasion of Kerala Piravi Day. The BJP leader said, “Kerala Piravi day wishes to the wonderful people of Kerala, who have always made indelible contributions to India’s growth. Kerala’s natural beauty has made it among the most popular destinations, drawing people from all over the world. Praying for Kerala’s continuous progress.”

The Chief Minister of the State Pinayari Vijayan also wished citizens on the occasion of the foundation day of the state. The state of Kerala was created on November 1, 1956, long after the Independence of India. Prior to 1956, the state was divided into the three regions of Malabar, Travancore and Cochin.

The state of Andhra Pradesh also celebrated its foundation day on November 1. Founded under the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, the state celebrated its 65th formation day on Sunday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished residents of the state on the occasion saying that Andhra Pradesh was synonymous with hard work. The 70-year-old added, “Andhra Pradesh is synonymous with hardwork and compassion. People belonging to AP have gone on to excel in several fields. On AP’s Formation Day, my greetings to the people of the state and best wishes for their developmental aspirations.”

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy also tweeted on the occasion of the formation day recalling the sacrifice of Mahaniyulu Potti Sriramulu, who laid down his life for the creation of a separate state for people who speak in Telugu.

The 47-year-old Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party leader added, “Mahaniyulu Potti Sriramulu was the one who sacrificed his life for the establishment of a separate state for the Telugu people. Andhra Pradesh is happy to continue the Landing Day celebrations in remembrance of the great man who paved the way for the formation of linguistic states in the country.”
