Even though the partial abolition of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code occurred in August 2018,  the stigma and prejudice against the LGBTQ+ community still remains significant. Regardless of the court’s ruling that they were entitled to the same rights as their cisgender heterosexual counterparts, violence against the community prevails at large.

However, certain parts of India have proven to be relatively safer for the queer community, most of them being metropolitan cities. Listed below are  of the most LGBTQ+ friendly destinations in India in no particular order:

  • Goa

Goa finds its way into every LGBTQ+ inclusive recommendation, with its queer-friendly hotels, clubs and restaurants. 

Due to the diverse tourists visiting the city at all times of the year, the residents are also said to be unprejudiced and tolerant of diverse beliefs and communities.

  • Bengaluru

Known for its elaborate and extensive LGBTQ+ events, Bengaluru is also a metropolitan city often recognised for its inclusivity with regards to sexuality. 

Besides the Bangalore Pride Parade being one of the largest events in the country, the city is also home to the ‘Bangalore Queer Festival’ organised by the Alliance Française. 

  • Mumbai

Similar to Bengaluru, Mumbai’s Pride Parade is just as showy if not more.

Often called the “most progressive” place in India, The Mumbai Queer Film Festival is an event that embodies this. The LGBTQ+ community of Mumbai is also known to host cultural events and gatherings. 

  • Delhi

Apart from its Queer Pride Parade, Delhi has always been known to be extremely vocal regarding the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

Besides the national capital being the first to hold a Pride Parade, it also is home to a vast range of queer-friendly establishments such as gardens, cafes, guesthouses, and clubs.
