Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to legendary vocalist Lata Mangeshkar at the Lok Sabha on Monday, which had been adjourned for an hour before the PM’s speech in memory of the late singer who died at the age of 92 on Sunday.

After the session resumed, an emotional PM Modi said, “Lata Mangeshkar moved an entire nation. She also brought the whole nation together.”

“We lost voice of the nation,” said the Prime Minister before moving on to matters of politics.

With elections in several states and a Union Territory around the corner, the Prime Minister highlighted the achievements of his government, saying, “Today poor people of the country are getting a gas and connection, house and toilets. They have their own bank account. But unfortunately, some people’s [opposition] minds are still stuck in 2014.”

“After losing so many elections there is no change in your [Congress] ‘Ahankaar’ [arrogance],” the Prime Minister went on, aiming his guns at the Congress.

“Nagaland voted for Congress 24 years ago, Odisha voted for you 27 years ago. You won with full majority in Goa 28 years ago. In 1988, Tripura voted for Congress. West Bengal voted for Congress in 1972. You take credit for creation of Telangana but the public did not accept you,” said Modi, before attacking the Grand Old Party for using the COVID-19 pandemic for political gains.

“During the first wave, when people were following lockdowns, guidelines were suggesting that people stay where they are, the Congress was standing at Mumbai Station and scaring innocent people,” said the Prime Minister at the Lok Sabha.

Modi went on to to say that the Congress had only created chaos and misery for migrants during the pandemic while his government fed 80 crore people through free rations.

“We need to strengthen our small farmers. Our focus is on them. But those who don’t know the pain of small farmers don’t have any right to do politics in the name of the farmers,” Modi further said.
