A police inspector reportedly ran over a woman and her friend this morning near the highway in Punjab’s Jalandhar. The woman died and her friend got critically injured. Furthermore, the inspector drove off without stopping. This led to anger in the area due to hit and run case, with people demanding the policeman’s arrest and further blocking the highway, causing a traffic jam.

“The women were hit around 8.30 am while they were standing by a road in the Jalandhar Cantonment area,” the police said. The policeman has been identified as Amrit Pal Singh.  “We have traced the car and the driver will be arrested soon,” Superintendent of Police Iqbal Singh Kahlo told reporters.

The car that sped towards them was a Maruti Brezza. As it hit them, one of the women, Navjot Kaur, died on the spot. The other is currently in the hospital with critical wounds.

In the CCTV footage, it shows that the car moved towards the women and rammed them despite them stepping back. Following the incident, a large crowd assembled at the spot by the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway, blocking traffic. Navjot worked in a local Hyundai showroom.

“My daughter left for work in the morning and was crossing the road near a railway crossing when the car hit them. The sub-inspector should be charged with murder,” Navjot’s mother Tejinder Kaur told NDTV.

Local residents said they would not “clear the highway unless Amrit Pal Singh, the inspector, was charged with murder”. The protest disrupted traffic in parts of the city.

In a similar case, recently, a car rammed into devotees in a Durga idol procession in Bhopal. The accident took place in the Bajaria Police station area. While two persons were injured, the case is still being investigated and no one has been arrested in connection to it.
