States across India celebrated the country’s 73rd Republic Day on January 26. While the main celebration was marked by a grand parade presided over by President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, states and Union Territories (UTs) marked the occasion in their own ways. Here is a look into how some states celebrated Republic Day.

Delhi:

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal marked Republic Day by hoisting the tricolour at his residence in the national capital. Kejriwal also took to Twitter to greet people, saying, “The Indian Constitution is the largest written Constitution in the world. This Constitution, composed by Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar, encapsulates the hopes and aspirations of every Indian.”

The national capital also saw the grand parade take place, which saw participation from the Indian armed forces and included a display of India’s growing military might.

Maharashtra:

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, and other members of the Maharashtra Cabinet marked Republic Day with a ceremony at Shivaji Park in Mumbai amid tightened security.

Uttar Pradesh:

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath marked Republic Day in the poll-bound state with a speech on the importance of the Indian Constitution.

“Our Republic is an integrated expression of our lofty democratic values and unwavering allegiance to the Constitution of India and our unity in diversity. Let us resolve to build ‘Ek Bharat- Shreshtha Bharat-Self-reliant India’,” said Adityanath.

West Bengal:

The state marked the occasion through a flag hoisting ceremony hosted by West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The Chief Minister had earlier said accused the Modi government of insulting West Bengal by rejecting its tableau on freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Karnataka:

Karnataka Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot marked Republic Day by extending his greetings to the people of the state and the country at large.

The Governor paid tribute to the “undying human spirit to triumph in the face of adversity” in the celebrations.

Tamil Nadu:

The southern state marked Republic Day through a flag hoisting ceremony hosted by Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi at the Marina Beach in Chennai.

The ceremony was attended by Chief Minister M K Stalin, in whose presence the flag was hoisted.

Assam:

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma marked Republic Day in the north eastern state by participating in a flag hoisting ceremony in Guwahati, where the governor of the state unfurled the national flag.

Jammu and Kashmir:

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha marked Republic Day by extending his greetings to the people.

Speaking at a ceremony during the day, Sinha said, “After the historic changes in August 2019 & subsequent transformative reforms, Jammu and Kashmir is poised to become the latest success story among Indian states and a model of Socio-Economic development for the country. Central government under the strong and able leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi took the bold and decisive step of breaking the shackles erected in the path of development of J&K.”

Rajasthan:

The western state of Rajasthan marked Republic Day with Governor Kalraj Mishra unfurling the national flag at the Sawai Man Singh in Jaipur.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot was also present during the flag hoisting ceremony and said, “Republic Day gives an opportunity to take a resolution that in the coming times, we should strengthen our constitution further. Today, whether it is a constitution, whether it is a democracy, such an environment has been created for it that I do not know what will happen in the coming time.”
