A fresh row has erupted between Assam and Mizoram amid simmering tensions over a border dispute that claimed lives of six people and left many injured last month.

The latest standoff on Thursday erupted over the construction of a road under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana at Khulichara village along the inter-state border in Assam’s Cachar district.

Assam Police claimed that a group of armed men from the Mizoram side tried to stop construction workers who were building the road in Khulichara, which is located about 12 km from Lailapur, where six Assam policemen were killed and over 45 injured in a two-hour long clash on July 6. The incident triggered a spat between the Chief Ministers of the two BJP-ruled states on Twitter with Union Home Minister Amit Shah having to step in to effect a truce.

NDTV.com reports that even though construction has been stopped for now, Assam Police has increased deployment in the area with Ramandeep Kaur, Superintendent of Police of Cachar district and Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Debojyoti Mukherjee and a police team rushing to the spot.

“Talks have been initiated at the top level and the talks with the counterparts are going on and I assume the issue will get resolved. They have once again violated these ground rules and have entered our territory,” NDTV quoted Kaur as saying.

The Mizoram police, too, have set up a camp in the area, while central forces have been deployed to avoid any conflict between the police forces of the two states.

Mizoram police the “violation” of state’s borders by Assam was brought to its notice by locals.” We had to object as they had entered Mizoram territory. We are trying to peacefully defuse this issue,” Vanlalfaka Ralte, SP of Mizoram’s Kolasib district, told NDTV over the telephone.
