Both the Indian openers started off their innings with huge 80+ m sixes. This comes after the openers had poor outings in the two previous matches. India were left 7/1 and 11/1 in their matches against Pakistan and Zimbabwe, respectively. Both times, it was KL Rahul who was dismissed first. This was the duo’s best opening partnership this WC.

However, the partnership didn’t last long as Lungi Ngidi sent Rohit Sharma back to the pavilion in the fifth over. Sharma tried to pull again, but failed to see the extra bounce on the Perth wicket. He misconnected and Ngidi caught and bowled him. KL Rahul soon followed his suit in the same over, edging the delivery to Aiden Makram.

India finished the powerplay with 33/2, their highest in terms of runs at the WC. Virat Kohli, who came in after Sharma, was also dismissed by the first time this T20 World Cup. Kohli shuffled across the crease to pull a short ball, but got a top edge. Kagiso Rabda then took a brilliant running catch at fine leg to give the bowler his third wicket of the match.
