Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur Nagar assembly constituency was won by Samajwadi Party (SP)’s Sanjay Garg in 2017. He defeated his closest rival, Rajiv Gumber of the BJP, by 4636 votes.
The legislative assembly seat of Saharanpur Nagar had a total of 393564 electors in 2017. There were 272509 valid votes in total. Sanjay Garg of the Samajwadi Party was elected as MLA from this seat. He received 127210 votes in total. Rajiv Gumber of the Bharatiya Janata Party came in second with 122574 votes. He was defeated by 4636 votes.

The BJP had won 312 of UP’s 403 assembly seats in 2017, earning an absolute majority and ousting the Samajwadi Party. Yogi Adityanath, the MP from Gorakhpur, was made the chief minister.
Saharanpur Nagar is one of five assembly constituencies in the Saharanpur Lok Sabha Constituency. It became a new constituency in 2008 as a result of delimitation.
In 2012, in the first election after Saharanpur Nagar came into being as an assembly seat, BJP’s Raghav Lakhanpal defeated Congress’ Saleem Ahmed by 12626 votes.

Of the other four assembly constituencies in Saharanpur Nagar, two were won by the BJP and one each by the Samajwadi Party and the Congress in the 2017 assembly elections. The Samajwadi Party led by Akhilesh Yadav came in a poor second behind the BJP, winning 47 assembly seats, Mayawati’s BSP was third with 19 and the Congress settled for fourth with seven seats.
In 2012, the Samajwadi Party had won the elections with 224 seats, the BSP was second, winning 80 seats, the BJP had won 47 and the Congress 28.
