The Sarkaghat Assembly Constituency has Daleep Thakur of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Pawan Kumar from the Indian National Congress (INC), Dhameshwar Ram of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) make contesting for this year’s Himachal Pradesh Assembly Elections

Himachal Pradesh has conventionally been an anti-incumbency state, with the BJP and the Congress coming to power alternately since 1985. This year, the Aam Aadmi Party hopes to change Himachal Pradesh’s political dynamics. Arvind Kejriwal’s party has pledged to create 6 lakh government jobs and to pay unemployed people Rs 3,000 via unemployment allowances. It has also stated that previous pension schemes will be enforced.

The BJP had won 44 of Himachal’s 68 assembly constituencies last time and the Congress had won 21. The CPI (M) had won one seat. A party needs to win 35 seats for a majority to form the government in the state.

In 2017, Inder Singh of the BJP defeated Pawan Kumar of Congress by 9,302 votes. Munish Sharma of the Communist Party of India Marxist CPI (M), Paro Devi of Lok Gathbandhan Party (LOGAP), Raj Kumar of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and independent candidates Jagdish Chand, Sanjiv Kumar, Moti Ram and Hem Raj also contested the 2017 election. 

Sarkaghat is one of the 68 assembly constituencies in Himachal Pradesh. Sarkaghat falls under the Mandi district and Mandi Lok Sabha constituency. Sarkaghat has more than 90,000 eligible voters. 

In 2012, Inder Singh of the BJP defeated Rangila Ram Rao of the Congress INC by 2,204 votes. Kashmir Singh of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Shiv Ram Sharma of Samajwadi Party (SP), Ajay Kumar of All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC) and Kamar Singh of Himachal Lokhit Party (HLP) and independent candidates Jagdish Chand, Moti Ram and Kishore Kumar also contested the HP Assembly Elections in 2012. 

Himachal Pradesh votes in a single round on November 12. Results will be announced on December 8. Elections to the Gujarat assembly are also expected to be held in December this year.
