After receiving an email threatening to kill him and his family, the Delhi Police increased security outside Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member of Parliament Gautam Gambhir’s residence in Delhi’s Rajendra Nagar area on Wednesday morning.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the former cricketer contacted police on Wednesday morning after receiving a threatening email from “ISIS Kashmir”.

Security has been increased outside Gambhir’s home, according to a police officer, and an investigation into the alleged death threat has begun.

The MP claimed in a letter to Shweta Chauhan, the deputy police commissioner (central), that he received a threat email from a group called “ISIS Kashmir”, which read, “We’re going to kill you and your family.” In addition to providing him with increased security, he urged the police to file a First Information Report on the incident.

Gambhir had previously approached the Delhi Police in December 2019 alleging death threats against him and his family from an international number. He also requested the police to file a report and make sure his family is safe and secure.

At the end of 2018, the former Indian cricketer announced his retirement from all forms of the game. In 2019, he joined the BJP, and in the same year, he won a seat in the Lok Sabha elections. The lawmaker made headlines earlier this week after criticizing comments made by Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu.

In response to Sidhu’s claim that Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan is his brother, Gambhir said Sidhu should first send his children to the borders before calling the “head of a terrorist state his big brother”.

The BJP leader called it a “shameful statement”, noting that many civilians and soldiers have been killed in Kashmir in the last month.

“He hugs the Pakistani Army Chief Bajwa, he goes to Kartarpur Sahib and calls Imran Khan his big brother. He goes against the people who want to protect India,” Gambhir had said.
