Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur assembly constituency was won by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2017, with the party’s Suresh Kumar Khanna defeating Samajwadi Party’s Tanveer Khan, who came in second.
Khanna received 1,00,734 votes and won by a margin of 19,203 over his nearest rival, Khan, who got 81,531 votes.
The top two candidates were the same in the 2012 Assembly Elections as well, with Suresh Kumar winning with 81,581 votes followed by Tanveer Khan with 65,403 votes.

The BJP had won 312 of UP’s 403 assembly seats in 2017, earning an absolute majority in the Vidhan Sabha or state assembly and ousting the Samajwadi Party. The BJP chose Yogi Adityanath to be UP’s chief minister.
The Samajwadi Party led by Akhilesh Yadav came in a poor second behind the BJP, winning 47 assembly seats, Mayawati’s BSP was third with 19 and the Congress settled for fourth with seven seats.

Voting for the Shahjahanpur seat will be held in the second phase of the UP assembly election on February 14. The state will vote in seven phases, with the last round on March 3.
Results will be declared on March 10, along with those for elections in four other states, including neighbouring Uttarakhand.
