Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party government over the skyrocketing inflation in the nation by comparing the costs of basic food commodities like oil, wheat, milk and vegetables under the eras of Congress and BJP.
“One more difference between the UPA era & the NDA: you feel it daily! #Inflation,” Tharoor wrote on Twitter.
The chart contains columns such as commodity name, May 2014, May 2022, and percentage of change in prices.
The chart shared by Tharoor shows that the prices of rice surged by 37% in a span of eight years, while that of flour increased by 43%.
Prices of pulses such as masoor, moong, urad, gram and tur have hiked between 17 and 59%.
The data further displayed a 51% and 92% increase in groundnut oil and mustard oil, respectively.
According to the chart, palm oil and Vanaspati oil have witnessed a whopping hike, with a 109% increase in the former and a 118% in the latter.
Oils like sunflower and soya have had a 95% and 97% increase, the data showed.
Salt prices increased by 31%, whereas milk prices observed a hike of 43%.
The government has attributed the inflation to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. Previously, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that all nations have faced the consequences of the war due to disruptions in supply chains.
In April, inflation shot up to a record high of 15.08% due to the high prices of fuel, food and other key commodities. With this figure, the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) continues to be in double digits for the 13th consecutive month since April 2021.
