Punjabi singer and Congress leader Sidhu Moose Wala was shot dead in Punjab’s Mansa district on Sunday. Unidentified persond opened fire at the 28-year-old when he was in his jeep at village Jawahar Ke, police said. Two more people sustained injuries in the shooting but there was no word on their condition.
Born on June 17, 1993, in Mansa, Moose Wala studied electrical engineering from Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana. He then did his post-graduation from Humber College, Canada. He released his first track ‘So High’ in 2017. Last year, Guardian named him among the ’50 new artists for 2020’.
He joined the Congress in December last year and fought on the party ticket from Mansa assembly seat in the recent assembly election and was defeated by AAP’s Dr Vijay Singla.
“I am not coming into politics for status or to earn praise. I want to become a part of the system to transform it. I am joining Congress to raise the voice of people. I am joining Congress as the party has leaders, who have come from common families. For instance Cabinet minister Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, who has risen from a common family,” Moose Waala had told the Indian Express at the time of joining Congress.

Following his death, Congress tweeted, “The murder of Shri Sidhu Moose Wala, Congress candidate from Punjab & a talented musician, has come as a terrible shock to the Congress party & the entire nation. Our deepest condolences to his family, fans & friends. We stand united & undeterred, at this time of extreme grief.”

The singer’s father, Bhola Singh Sidhu, is an army veteran. His mother, Charan Kaur, became the village sarpanch in 2018.
