The hashtag Sorry Sheru has been trending on Twitter for 2 days and is related to an unfortunate and shocking incident of animal cruelty. Ahmad Shahi, a 65-year-old vegetable vendor in Mumbai, was arrested for allegedly raping over 30 dogs in the city. One among the canines was a 6-month-old canine named Sheru. Twitter users are now using the hashtag to bash the elderly man and ask PETA India to take strict action against him.

Animal Rights Activist Vijay Mohnani came across a video of the accused raping a dog and immediately reached out to the police, who filed a complaint against Shahi.

“I received a call from a resident of Juhu Galli, who told me there is a man in their area who rapes street dogs. The man said he has a video shot in December 2020, where the accused is caught on camera raping the dog. I asked him why he did not complain to the police earlier… the man said he knew the accused and had warned him not to repeat the act, but the accused kept repeating it, and hence, he informed me about it,” Mohnani said in his complaint.

After the incident was reported by the media, several animal lovers took to Twitter to bash the accused. They began trending the hashtag ‘Sorry Sheru’ and called upon PETA to take strict action against him. Some even slammed Bollywood celebrities for not speaking on the issue.

The accused was taken into custody and charged under Section 429 (Whoever commits mischief by killing, poisoning, maiming, or rendering useless) and 377 (unnatural sex) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
