A 56th minute penalty by Sunil Chhetri helped Bengaluru FC secure their first win of the Indian Super League 2020 season on Friday.

Bengaluru FC won the penalty after Edwin Vanspaul, who came as a substitute for an injured Anirudh Thapa, was brought down by Cleiton Silva. The first half-of the match remained a tight contest with both the sides making rough tackles and struggling to create chances.

Following a tight first-half, the game opened up in the second-half with Bengaluru creating more chances following the penalty.

Chennai had a brilliant opportunity to equalise in the 69th minute from a Rafael Crivellaro header. However, it was deflected away off Ashique Kuruniyan’s outstretched hand, which went unnoticed.

Regarding the lost opportunity, Chennaiyin FC coach Laszlo told Sportstar, “I think if we lose 1-0 it’s always painful. I can tell you guys, last 35 minutes we tried to score the goal. It was a clear penalty but referee didn’t see it.”

He added, “I criticised players internally because we made some stupid mistakes before the goal. we need to work. Tactically we could have been better in the first half.”

With the win, Bengaluru Fc moved up to the third place with five points in three games while Chennaiyin FC is placed at sixth with four points.

Bengaluru FC coach Cuadrat told Sportstar, “We are improving the pattern ofplay. Still the last pass is not happening. We had some good chances for the last pass to get 2-0. We were suffering at the end because of that.”
