Comedian Munawar Faruqui was on Friday granted bail by the Supreme Court in a case filed against him for allegedly “insulting Hindu Gods and Goddesses” during a show.

The top court also issued a notice to Madhya Pradesh police on Faruqui’s plea challenging the high court order refusing him bail in the case.

Faruqui, a resident of Gujarat, was earlier denied bail by the Madhya Pradesh High Court on January 28. The arrest on January 1 followed a complaint by Eklavaya Singh Gaur, son of a BJP MLA, that the comedian made objection remarks on Hindu deities in a show in Indore. Five others were also arrested.

Justice Rohit Arya of the Madhya Pradesh High Court had in his order said that making a case for Faruqui’s bail is out of order due to the relevant material and witness accounts collected in the case, as well as due to the reason that investigation for the matter was ongoing.
