Suryakumar Yadav, who made his India debut against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, made headlines and hogged all the limelight right from the word go. From an audacious first-ball maximum to a match-setting half-century, it was Suryakumar’s night on March 18.

Despite his heroics, his controversial dismissal left a sour taste in the Indian cricket fans’ mouth when a supposed umpiring blunder cost Suryakumar his wicket, leaving captain Virat Kohli furious and perplexed.

However, if that is cast aside for a second, his first-ball announcement in the international scene can become one of most talked about incidents in the coming months. Shardul Thakur, who took over from Yuzvedra Chahal as an interviewer for Team India, sat Suryakumar down and asked him about the maximum.

“Firstly, feeling elated on winning the match. Because it was my dream to play for India and win matches for the team. I didn’t complicate things out in the middle and expressed myself. The feeling was the same but definitely had butterflies in my stomach. I knew that if I played my natural game, all things would fall in place,” the right-handed batsman said in an interview on bcci.tv.

“I’ve always seen Jofra Archer in the IPL, in international cricket and know his tactics. He (Jofra) always tries to put a new batsman on the backfoot Plus, I’ve played against him in the IPL, so I know how which areas he is used to bowling,” Suryakumar added.

Talking about the shot off Jofra Archer, Suryakumar said: “I’ve been playing this shot for a long time now – local cricket, domestic cricket. I used to play with rubber balls and on the cemented pitch so this shot comes naturally to me. From local cricket to international cricket, this shot has its own journey.”

Suryakumar Yadav was adjudged man of the match for his whirlwind 57-run knock, helping India win the tie and draw level at 2-2.

The fifth and final match of the T20I series will be played on March 20 at the same venue.
