Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that he is grateful to the people of Gujarat for trusting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and voting for it in civic polls. “Always an honour to serve Gujarat,” he said in a tweet. BJP president JP Nadda also thanked voters of all six municipal corporations in Gujarat, adding the party has received an overwhelming majority in the civic polls, reported ANI.

Counting of votes is being conducted in the six civic bodies- Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot, Surat, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar. Polling was conducted on Sunday amid tight security and in adherence to COVID-19 norms.

“Thank you Gujarat! Results of municipal elections across the state clearly show the unwavering faith people have towards politics of development & good governance. Grateful to the people of the state for trusting BJP yet again. Always an honour to serve Gujarat,” Modi tweeted.

“Today’s win across Gujarat is very special. For a party that’s serving in a state for over 2 decades to record such a phenomenal win is noteworthy. Heartening to see widespread support from all sections of society, particularly the youth of Gujarat towards BJP,” he added.

Winning 409 of the 474 seats, BJP is set to retain power in all six municipal corporations while Congress is confident of making a dent. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) are also on the fray, with both parties looking to open their accounts in the six urban civic bodies.
