According to scientists, some evidence shows that water is available on the moon, may more than abundant and it can be relatively accessible. This new discovery can help astronauts in the future mission to the moon and space exploration.
Casey Honniball at Nasa’s ASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, US, and his colleagues have detected a chemical signature, which is H2O.
The scientists detected H2O by measuring the wavelength of sunlight reflecting off the surface of the moon using the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (Sofia), a modified Boeing 747 carrying a 2.7-metre reflecting telescope.
The water at the moon at high latitudes towards the south pole in abundances of about 100 to 400 parts per million H2O.
Honniball, speaking virtually during a teleconference, said the amount of water is roughly equivalent to a 12-ounce bottle of water in a cubic metre of lunar soil,” quoted BBC. Honniball’s NASA colleague Jacob Bleacher said researchers still need to understand the nature of the watery deposits, which would help them determine how much water is accessible for future explorations.
