Members of political fraternity paid their tributes to Tarun
Gogoi, who died in Guwahati on Monday at the age of 86.  

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences, describing him as a popular leader.

“Shri Tarun Gogoi Ji was a popular leader and a veteran
administrator, who had years of political experience in Assam as well as the
Centre. Anguished by his passing away.

“My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this
hour of sadness. Om Shanti,” Modi said on Twitter.

Gogoi died on Monday at the age of 86 while undergoing
treatment for post-COVID-19 complications.

President Ram Nath Kovind too paid his tribute to Gogoi, who
holds the record of being the longest serving chief minister of Assam.  

His passing away marks the end of an era, the President said
in a tweet, adding that his long tenure in office was a period of epochal
change in the state.

“Extremely sad to know of the demise of Shri Tarun
Gogoi, former Chief Minister of Assam. The country has lost a veteran leader
with rich political and administrative experience. His long tenure in office
was a period of epochal change in Assam,” Kovind tweeted.

Gogoi was the Chief Minister of Assam for a record 15 years,
serving from 2001 to 2016, when he ceded the post to BJP’s Sarbananda Sonowal.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi remembered his as a “wise
teacher”.

“Shri Tarun Gogoi was a true Congress leader. He devoted his
life to bringing all the people and communities of Assam together. For me, he
was a great and wise teacher. I loved and respected him deeply. I will miss him.
My love and condolences to Gaurav & the family,” Gandhi tweeted.

Delhi Chief
Minister Arvind Kejriwal too expressed his pain at the leader’s death.

“Deeply pained by the
unfortunate demise of former CM Assam Tarun Gogoi Ji. My heartfelt condolences
to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace,” he said in a tweet.

Bengal Chief Minister
Mamata Banerjee offered her condolences to the Assam leader’s family.

“Saddened
to hear about the passing away of veteran leader and former Chief Minister of
Assam for 3 terms, Tarun Gogoi Ji. My deepest condolences to his family,
followers and well-wishers,” she said.
