US President-elect Joe Biden clinched victory in the presidential election as he garnered the 270 college electorate votes on Monday. At 78, he is set to be the oldest President of the United States.
%u201CThe rule of law, our Constitution and the will of the people prevailed,%u201D the 46th US President said after the college electorate ascertained his victory.
%u201CThe flame of democracy was lit in this nation a long time ago. And we now know nothing, not even a pandemic or an abuse of power, can extinguish that flame,%u201D he added.
The former vice president turned 78 on November 20. On his inauguration on January 20, he’ll be the oldest US president. Ronald Reagan was 77 when he entered the Oval Office, while President Donald Trump was 70.
Although, it’s extremely far-fetched, what if the worst-case scenario comes out to be true.
What if a president-elect dies before his/her inauguration?
Following Monday’s college electorate vote, Biden is officially the President-elect. A joint session of the Congress will certify the vote in January, following which he’ll be inaugurated on January 20.
According to the 20th Amendment of the US Constitution, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will take over the top job, if the worst-case scenario pans out.
Fortunately, no US president-elect has died before his inauguration.
