Vishwakarma Puja, a duty-oriented custom will be performed this year on Friday, September 17. This day marks the birth of Lord Vishwakarma, the engineer of God. The deity is often hailed as ‘Swayambhu’ or creator of the world, as he is believed to have created the Earth for God. It is also believed that Vishwakarma constructed Lord Krishna‘s holy city of Dwarka, the palace of Indraprastha for the Pandavas, and several fabulous weapons for the gods.

Lord Vishwakarma was born on Kanya Sankranti day (a day when the Sun migrates to the Kanya/Virgo sign). This year the day falls on Friday.

Vishwakarma Puja date and timings

Vishwakarma Puja 2021 will be performed on September 1 and the Shubh muhurta for the customs is 1:29 am.

History of Vishwakarma Puja

Vishwakarma Puja is performed on the Vishwakarma Jayanti. Lord Vishwakarma, the creator of the World, was born on this day and thus, to mark his birth and celebrate the hard work and talent of artisans and creators, this puja is performed.

Who is Lord Vishwakarma

As mentioned above, Lord Vishwakarma also called Biswakarma, was the engineer of gods and credited with the creation of this beautiful world. He is believed to have created Lord Krishna’s Dwarka and Indraprastha as well.

Lord Vishwakarma is mostly depicted as a heavily bearded, wise man endowed with four hands. His idol holds a measuring tape and a scale in his upper right and left hands, a book, and a pot in his lower right and left hands.

Significance of Vishwakarma Puja

The day celebrates the hard work and talent of architects, engineers, skilled labourers, mechanics, factory workers, smiths, welders, industrial workers and craftsmen. Thus the festival is celebrated with gusto by these workgroups. One can often find pictures and posters of Lord Vishwakarma in workshops and factories.

On this day workers don’t do any professional work and worship their tools, offering prayers to Lord Vishwakarma to protect them, keep their livelihoods secure and bring them success. Vishwakarma Puja is celebrated with fervour in the states of Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Tripura.
