The train route between Dibrugarh (DBRG), in Assam in the northeast to Kanyakumari (CAPE), in Tamil Nadu is the longest train route in India. It covers 4,273km and crosses over 9 states with 58 stops. It takes over 80 hours and 15 minutes to travel the distance. It follows Assam, Nagaland, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The Vivek Express started running in November 2011. It commemorated Swami Vivekananda’s 150th birth anniversary which was held in 2013. The train was the last to suspend its operations during the nationwide lockdown to combat COVID-19. The train route happens to be one of the longest train routes in the world. The route witnesses different climates, and linguistic regions and sees various cultures along the way.

The Railway Ministry has thought of starting a new Vivek Express along the North to East corridor, as a result of the favourable response to Vivek Express. The train will connect Jammu Tawi and North East India. Vivek Express travels from East to South India, South to West India, West to North India and then again from East to South. The Vivek Express quadrilateral will be finished with the newly built North to East Vivek Express.

Although India has one of the longest train routes in the world, Russia beats everyone with the world’s longest railroad line. The train connects the West of Russia with the distant East. The train takes approximately six days and passes through multiple time zones. It covers around 9,250 km starting from Moscow and culminates at Vladivostok. When compared to India, the route is 4,977km longer.
Indian Railways has a history of 168 years and has one of the largest rail networks in the world. According to the data for 2021, The network covers 1,26,611km of tracks spread across the entire country. It is divided into 17 zones. The Indian Railways carried 3.43 million passengers every day from 2020-21.
