Haryana police on Wednesday used water cannons and tear gas on the protesting farmers as they tried to jump and remove barricades and enter the state as part of their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march.

Police along the Shambhu inter-state border near the city of Ambala used loud speakers to disperse the crowd as they tried to cross and remove the barricades, PTI reported. 

Ahead of the Punjab farmers’ march to the national capital to protest against the newly-implemented farm laws, Haryana completely sealed its borders with the neighbouring state. 

There was heavy deployment of Haryana police on the borders with Punjab with a considerable force also being assembled along the state’s borders with Delhi.

At the Shambhu inter-state border, the situation was tense as protestors threw the barricades into the Ghaggar river. Some were also seen wearing black flags. 

“It is condemnable that Haryana Police is using such measures to suppress an assembly of peaceful protesters. We are protesting in a peaceful manner, but they want to prevent us from using our democratic right to protest,” PTI quoted a farmer as saying. 

Earlier today, a group of farmers from Haryana jumped barricades near Mohra village in Ambala, with police resorting to the use of water cannons against them. 

However, another group managed to proceed to Tiyora-Tiyori village on the Ambala-Kurukshetra border, where police again used water cannons to stop their march to Delhi.

This group of Haryana farmers, led by state BKU chief Gurnam Singh Charuni, had reached Karnal as part of their march to Delhi.

The Delhi police had earlier underscored that they turned down multiple requests from farmer groups to protest in the national capital on November 26 and 27.
