As Droupadi Murmu defeated Yashwant Sinha to become the 15th President of India, the country began celebrating her rise to the top. Murmu has also become India’s first-ever Tribal President, and is the second woman to hold the office after Pratibha Patil in 2007.

Murmu hails from the Mayurbhanj district in Odisha, where celebrations began as counting began in New Delhi. The new Indian President, who was born in Uparbeda village, had begun her political journey after she became a ward councillor in the district. She later went on to become a two-time MLA and a minister of the state government. She was later appointed as the 9th Governor of Jharkhand, and was the first woman to hold the office.
