Indian boxer Sagar Ahlawat made headlines when he qualified for the men’s over 92kg (Super Heavyweight) boxing semifinals of the Commonwealth Games 2022 after beating Seychelles’ Keddy Evans Agnes 5-0 on Thursday. The victory also meant that the 23-year-old boxer has now ensured another medal for India at the mega event.
The Indian boxing contingent has been overly impressive at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022. On Thursday itself, as many as three boxers ensured a medal for India. Amit Panghal began the day with a 5-0 win over Scotland’s Lennon Mulligan, while Jaismine Lamboria followed suit with a 4-1 victory over New Zealand’s Troy Garton as both pugilists made the semifinals.

Sagar Ahlawat, who was the third Indian boxer on display, also did not disappoint as it looked like a one-sided show in the quarterfinal, as he brushed Keddy Evans Agnes aside to advance to the semifinal.

Sagar Ahlwat will now face Nigerian boxer Ifeanyi Onyekwerengr in the semifinal, in a bid to ensure either the gold or silver medal at his event at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
India has already won 18 medals at the ongoing edition of the quadrennial event, including five gold medals. However, the number is set to reach much higher when the boxers confirm the colour of their respective medals, along with other athletes who have already ensured medals.

Sagar’s medal will also be India’s sixth boxing medal at the ongoing edition of the Commonwealth Games. Nitu Ghanghas, Nikhat Zareen, Mohammad Hussamuddin, Amit Panghal and Jaismine Lamboria are the other Indian pugilists who have confirmed medals at the mega event now.
However, if Rohit Tokas manages to defeat Xavier Mata’afa-Ikinofo of Niue in the quarterfinal of the men’s welterweight category and advance to the semifinal, he will also ensure a medal at the Commonwealth Games. This will also help boxing to become the second most successful discipline for India at the ongoing edition of the tournament with seven medals.
