Incidents of stone-pelting were reported during a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rally in Kolkata on Monday. The rally was attended by Union Minister Debasree Chaudhuri, state chief Dilip Ghosh and Trinamool Congress (TMC) turncoat Suvendhu Adhikari.

The rally was held hours after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a rally, where she declared she will contest the upcoming assembly election from the Nandigram constituency.

Nandigram is a long-time bastion of political heavyweight Adhikari.

Speaking at the rally in Nandigram, Banerjee said she was not worried about the people leaving her party as they were not around when it was formed. She also said that they were fleeing to protect the money “they have looted” in the last few years.

With the assembly elections inching closer, likely to be held in April-May, incidents of violence between the BJP and the ruling TMC have become increasingly frequent.

In December, BJP national president JP Nadda’s convoy was attacked with bricks and stones near Diamond Harbour, where a number of leaders were injured and cars were damaged.
