Television actor Urfi
Javed
often reigns over headlines with her peculiar styling choices and airport
looks. This time, the 24-year-old has caused a social media storm after being
clicked at the airport with the Hindu scripture Bhagavad Gita in
hand.

Spotted
at the airport on Monday, Urfi sported a casual t-shirt that read “Not
Javed Akhtar’s Granddaughter”. A snippet of her look was uploaded by
celebrity photographer Viral Bhayani on Instagram.

Soon after being
uploaded, many internet users poured in to express their disdain. While one
user was grateful that Urfi had opted for a modest ensemble, others ridiculed
the t-shirt quote. One user wrote, “You can’t be his granddaughter anyway. They
are one of the respectable families in Bollywood.”

Other internet users
criticised Urfi for casually carrying the holy book. One user wrote, “Shrimad
Bhagavad Gita padhne ke liye hai, naa ki photo khichane ke liye” (the holy book
is meant for reading, not to click pictures with). Another user wrote, “Iske
haath mein Bhagavad Gita aate hi badal gayi” (she quickly transformed soon
after getting a Bhagavad Gita in hand).

The Instagram post
captioned  “Controversial #urfijaved” has amassed nearly 40,000 likes and
hundreds of thousands of views. While some wonder what happened to Urfi’s old
choice of clothing, others trolled the actor for disrespecting the sacred book
and using it as a means of publicity.

In a
recent interview with India Today, Urfi stated that she has recently been
reading the holy book and is keen to learn more about Hinduism. She added that
while she hates extremism, she aims to learn and extract the good parts of the
book.
