Marvel‘s Watcher is widely known for keeping a strict code of conduct of not interfering with a branched storyline or everyday happening of mortal beings. However, at the same time, he is known for repeatedly breaking that oath. As per fans, Watcher breaking his oath in Marvel’s What If…? was not unexpected. Wile Uatu broke his oath one time in the TV series, the comics version of him broke his oath a massive 300 times.

Uatu is known for his appearance in the Galactus Trilogy. Its story has been told over three issues in the Fantastic Four books. The first time he broke his oath was in this trilogy.

When Watcher promises to stand by the humans in hours of need, Galactus challenges “Then you would violate your pledge never to interfere in cosmic affairs?” Later, the Watcher paid a tribute to the pledge by guiding the Human Torch through the space to retrieve the ‘Ultimate Nullifier’. This is the only weapon that Galactus is afraid of.

The 2008 Eternal series, Eternals #7, written by Charles and Daniel Knauf featured a character named Tiamut, the Dreaming Celestial.

When the Dreaming Celestial shifted his focus on Uatu, he found out that the Watcher had intervened in mortal affairs “…on three-hundred and thirty-seven separate occasions,” Tiamut observed.

In the comics, the Dreaming Celestial believed that the Watcher is defective because of his oath-breaking stint.

The Watcher is famous in the Marvel universe not only because of his oath but his inclination toward breaking the oath. Courtesy of Dreaming Celestial, fans now know that the events that happened in Marvel’s What If…? has only unearthed a small bit of the Watcher’s capability of interfering with the ongoings of the universe.

According to some fans, who have followed the Watcher, his instances of breaking an oath more than 300 times is an underestimation.
