Vijay Babu, a Malayalam actor and producer, has been arrested by Kerala police on suspicion of sexually assaulting a female actor.

The accuser claims that Babu attacked her sexually while pretending to offer her a part in a movie. She admitted to having entered a romantic relationship with the actor after being promised roles in films and marriage. The complainant hails from Kozhikode.

The news of the assault first broke out in April and Vijay Babu went live on his social media account shortly after, emphasising that he was the “real victim” in this situation and promising to pursue the proper legal action against the complainant whom we went on to name.

The police are currently preparing to file a second complaint against Vijay Babu for revealing the complainant’s identity.

The accuser said that Vijay Babu repeatedly raped her in a Kochi apartment and even filmed an explicit video of her doing so. She said that the actor had gotten her inebriated before assaulting her.

He received an anticipatory release from the Kerala High Court on June 22. The Kerala High Court summoned his passport and asked him not to leave the state. Vijay Babu fled to Dubai soon after he was accused in April and returned to Kochi on June 1, after spending 39 days abroad.

Vijay Babu was ordered by the court to appear before the police investigation team on June 27 and was arrested the same day. 

HC has granted the investigation team permission to question the actor beginning July 3 (Monday) from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The actor took to social media late Tuesday and said- “I am the victim in this case as I know how pained are my mother, my family, friends and well-wishers because of this baseless complaint. But I am not going to sit idle, I will fight it out and let it be a new beginning in such cases,” he said.

The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) expressed its support for Vijay Babu on Sunday. It stated that no action would be taken until the court makes its decision.
