Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal gave his resignation to President Ram Nath Kovind due to “personal reasons” on Wednesday, sources informed NDTV. 

He was appointed on December 31, 2016, as the 21st Lieutenant Governor of Delhi after Najeeb Jung abruptly resigned from the post.

Baijal is a retired civil servant of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) with a career spanning over 37 years.

Education

Baijal holds two master’s degrees, one in arts from the University of Allahabad and the other in development economics from the University of East Anglia, England.

Career

He is a 1969 batch IAS officer from the cadre of AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory). Baijal was the Union Home Secretary during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

While serving the role, he accused Kiran Bedi of infringing every single clause of the jail manual and removed her from the post of inspector general of prisons.

Baijal served several roles throughout his career, including the Chief Secretary of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Managing Director of Indian Airlines, Chairman of Delhi Development Authority, Prasar Bharati CEO, additional Home Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Councilor in Charge of India Aid Mission in Nepal,  Development Commissioner of Goa and  Commissioner (Sales Tax and Excise) of Delhi. 

He also contributed extensively to the launch of DD Bharti.

In 2006, Baijal retired as the Secretary of the Urban Development Ministry. Later on, he took part in the planning and implementation process of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) which was initiated during Manmohan Singh’s tenure as the prime minister.

Baijal was also a part of the executive council of Vivekananda International Foundation and several other boards such as IDFC bank.

In the present Narendra Modi government, he served as an advisor of the National e-Governance Advisory Group (NAG) and the Advisory Group for Integrated Development of Power, Coal, and Renewable Energy. He was also the chairman of a High Level Committee on implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility.
