Konijeti Rosaiah, veteran Congress leader and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister whose political career spanned six decades, died on the way to a private hospital after falling ill on the morning of December 4. The 88-year-old passed away in Hyderabad after reaching  STAR Hospital in an unresponsive state.

Former Andhra CM, ex-governor of Tamil Nadu K Rosaiah dies

Rosaiah served as the 15th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh between 2009 and 2010. This was followed by a tenure as the Governor of Tamil Nadu between 2011 and 2016.

In his long political career with the Indian National Congress (INC), Rosaiah served as an MLC, MLA and MP several times and held ministerial posts.

Rosaiah was one of the most experienced political leaders in the country and will be remembered for his role as the state’s finance minister. He presented the state budget 16 times, including seven consecutive times, a record in India.

During his tenure as Andhra Pradesh finance minister, teachers received retirement benefits and the strict fiscal management policies ensured proper utilisation of  government funds.

As Governor of Tamil Nadu he also had to act as the Governor of Karnataka upon H.R. Bhardwaj’s term coming to an end in June 2014. Konijeti retired from active politics upon the completion of his term as Governor of Tamil Nadu. 

He was born in a Telugu speaking family in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, and went on to graduate from the Guntur Hindu College, Andhra University, in commerce. Rosaiah married Sivalakshmi in June 1950 and the couple had three sons and one daughter. He was often seen helping the underprivileged children through socio-cultural activities. His skills as an orator will never be forgotten.

Apart from being a politician, Rosaiah was an agriculturist, trader and industrialist. He was also a member of the Spices Board in 1998.
