Who is Sourav Ganguly?

Sourav Ganguly, the current President of the BCCI, is a former national captain of the Indian cricket team. Born in 1978 in Kolkata, West Bengal, he was introduced to cricket by his elder brother Snehashish.

Ganguly made his Ranji Trophy debut in the 1990-91 season, and after a prolific season, was chosen to play for India against the West Indies in 1992, marking the start of his career in the Indian cricket team. However, he had a rocky start to his international career, and was dropped due to alleged attitudinal problems.

Ganguly was recalled to the team for India’s tour of England in 1996, and became the third player in history to score a century at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. He cemented his place in the team in the 1999 Cricket World Cup, and went on to establish himself as one of the world’s leading batsmen over the course of his career. Ganguly became the captain of the Indian cricket team in 2000, and is regarded as one of the best captains India has ever had.

A left-handed opening batsman, Ganguly was especially prolific through the off-side and became the third player in cricket history to score over 10,000 runs in ODIs, after Sachin Tendulkar and Inzamam Ul Haq. He is currently the eight highest scorer in ODIs and has more than 11,000 runs to his credit.

For his contributions to Indian cricket, Ganguly was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards, in 2004.

After his career in the Indian cricket team, Ganguly served as the head of the Cricket Association of Bengal, and was elected as the President of the BCCI in 2019.

He has appeared in popular TV shows in West Bengal, and is the co-owner of the Indian Super League (ISL) team Atletico de Kolkata.

Ganguly suffered a mild heart attack in January 2021 due to blocked coronary arteries and was admitted to the hospital with COVID-19 in December 2021.
