Google has shared a doodle on Margherita Hack on her birth anniversary. Hack was an Italian astrophysicist and the discoverer of asteroid 8558 Hack

She was originally from Florence, Italy and taught astronomy at the University of Trieste. Hack made history as she was the first Italian woman to administer the Trieste Astronomical Observatory. 

Even though her interest and research pertained to a broad range of subjects, her main expertise was in observation and interpretation of the spectroscopic characteristics of the stars.

Her research work revolved around the chemical composition of stars, their surface temperature and engagement with gravity. 

In 1974, she published her first research article in Nature. The article took data from the Copernicus satellite. 

During the 1970s, she worked on the UV data from the Copernicus satellite to study the energetic phenomenon of the stellar atmosphere.

Besides her interests in outer space, she was also actively involved in human rights, space pioneering progressive causes and animal protection. 

She received the highest honour of the Italian Republic, the title of “Dama di Gran Croce” on her 90th birthday in 2012. 

She died on June 29, 2013, in Trieste due to a heart condition.
