KBC Offline Quiz (Sep 2, 2021): Who was the last Mughal Emperor?
The options are:
– Aurangzeb
– Zafar
– Babur
– Sher Shah Suri
Answer: Zafar
In 1862, Bahadur Shah II, also known as Zafar, died in a British prison in Burma. He was the last ruler of Mughal Emperor. In his earlier years as the king, he presided over a culturally sophisticated court. Soon after the British East India Company entered India and extended its control over more of India, Zafar’s rule came to an end. A mutiny of the sepoys against their British officers led to the siege of Delhi and established direct British colonial rule. It was the end Zafar as emperor.
He was the second son Akbar II and upon Akbar’s death became the emperor on September 28, 1837. Following his involvement in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British exiled him to Rangoon in British-controlled Burma (now in Myanmar), after convicting him on several charges.
He was a noted Urdu poet and wrote a number of Urdu ghazals. While some part of his opus was lost or destroyed during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a large collection did survive, and was compiled into the Kulliyyat-i-Zafar. The court that he maintained was home to several prolific Urdu writers, including Mirza Ghalib, Dagh, Mumin, and Zauq.
