Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) pacer Pat
Cummins
has been ruled out of the IPL 2022 due to a hip injury. He will leave
for Australia early. The Australian Test skipper, who was roped in by KKR for
Rs 7.25 crore, will be returning to Sydney for his rehabilitation ahead of
Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka next month, reported Cricket Australia’s official
website.

The Australia Test skipper is also a key member of
the ODI and T20 teams. His fitness holds the key to the team’s success during
its hectic 18-month-long cricket calendar.

Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka will be
followed by the T20 World Cup at home in October-November when they will defend
the title that they won for the first time in 2021 in the UAE. The T20 World
Cup will be followed by a five-match Test series at home and a Test tour of
India. It will follow an away Ashes series in England.

Australia will then get set for the ICC
ODI World Cup in October 2023 in India.

Cummins played only five matches in the
IPL this year and picked up seven wickets at a strike rate of 17.0.

With the bat, he scored 63 runs, which
includes a blazing 14-ball 56 not out against Mumbai Indians — the joint
highest fifty in the history of the IPL — last month.

Cummins, along with other leading
Australian players, will undoubtedly have to prioritise some series at the
expense of others, especially as he continues to adjust to the demands of being
Test captain, the role he assumed at the beginning of the home Ashes summer
just gone.
