Incessant rains caused play to be called off without a ball being bowled on Day 4 of the World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and New Zealand at the Hampshire Bowl on Monday. 

New Zealand will resume their innings in the 50th over at 101-2 tomorrow. Both New Zealand openers departed on Day 3, Tom Latham’s dismissal being the first one. Number 3 batsman Kane Williamson arrived in the 35th over, and the late dismissal of Devon Conway brought in Ross Taylor to the crease.

After the first day was suspended, it was guaranteed the WTC final would extend till the reserve day, which is on Wednesday. Effectively, this makes today, the third day of the match. On Day 2, New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl first. India, by the end of the day’s play, finished with 146-3 on the board. On Day 3, India were bundled out for 217 in 92.1 overs. Ajinkya Rahane top-scored with 49, but it was pacer Kyle Jamieson who stood out with bowling figures of 5-31 from 22 overs.

The Kiwi openers started brightly in their first innings. Ashwin opened the account for India in the 35th over by dismissing Tom Latham, who was caught at the cover region by Virat Kohli after scoring 30. Conway scored 54 runs before getting dismissed at mid-on by Mohammed Shami in the last over of the day. Two soft dismissals brought India the two wickets.
