The International Day of Families is celebrated every year on May 15 across the globe. The day is mainly observed to focus on the well-being of families across the world through keeping health, education, human rights, children rights, gender equality and work-family balance in check.

Amid the deadly pandemic, everyone has been forced to stay at home and the daily lives have come to a pause. Schools have shut, workplaces have gone remote and technology has become the only way you can keep in touch. New technologies have come out as a saviour for many among the pandemic.

Theme for 2021:

The theme for this year is ‘Families and New Technologies’. As per the theme, the pandemic has taught everyone the importance of technologies for work, education and communication. According to the UN 2021’s International Day of Families will focus on, “Socially just transition towards sustainable development: the role of digital technologies on social development and well-being of all.”

Significance behind the day:

Through the International Day of Families, governments, NPOs and other such groups raise awareness amongst families about issues related to their well-being. The day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993.
