KBC 13 Offline Quiz (September 14, 2021): Name the bird that can fly backwards
The options are:
Hummingbirds are the only birds capable of flying backwards from the front. It is mainly due to the structure of their wings. The design of a hummingbird's wings differs from most other types of birds as they have a unique ball and socket joint at their shoulder, which allows them to rotate their wings at about 180 degrees in all directions. This way hummingbirds are able to fly in the opposite directions.
The shape of hummingbirds' wings is long, narrow and tapered, which allows them to move more quickly and easily through the air.
Not only this, but the shoulder and elbow joints of their wing are very close to the bodies that facilitate the wings to tilt and pivot. These characteristics allow hummingbirds to change flight directions in a way other birds cannot.
