The options are:

a. Odisha

b. Andhra Pradesh

c. Karnataka

d. West Bengal

Answer: Odisha

One of the world's largest earthen dams, Hirakud Dam, is built across the Mahanadi River, which is about 15 kilometres from Sambalpur in the state of Odisha in India. Behind the dam is a lake called Hirakud Reservoir, which is about 55 km long.

It is one of the first major multipurpose river valley projects started after India's independence. The construction of Hirakund Dam was announced after the devastating floods of 1936 in Odisha. The project was proposed by Sir M Visveswararya after a detailed investigation for storage reservoirs in the Mahanadi basin to tackle the problem of floods in the Mahanadi delta.
