KBC 13 Offline Quiz (October 1, 2021): Where is the origin of Odisha's largest river the Mahanadi?
The options are:
1- West Bengal
Mahanadi, which is the largest river in Odisha and the sixth-largest in India, originates from Chhatisgarh. However, the river's exact origin is not known but the farthest headwater can be found on the Sihawa hills of the Bastar Plateau in Dhamtari district of Chhattisgarh, hence it is called the origin point of the river Mahanadi.
Mahanadi drains an area of around 132,100 square kilometres (51,000 sq mi) and has a total length of 900 kilometres (560 mi). Mahanadi is also known for the Hirakud Dam.
The term Mahanadi comes from the ancient Indian language Sanskrit. It is coined by amalgamating two words Maha, which means great in English and Nadi which is the Sanskrit and Hindi for the river.
