KBC Offline Quiz (September 8, 2021: Which Indian state has the largest production of Coffee?
A. Tamil Nadu
D. Andhra Pradesh
Answer: A. Karnataka
Karnataka contributes almost 71% of the total coffee production in India with Robusta being the main variety of the coffee grown in the state. However, Arabica is also produced in good amounts in Karnataka. This is made possible due to appropriate climatic conditions, high altitude, sloppy mountains, and adequate rainfall, all which boost coffee plantation. Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, and Kodagu in Karnataka remain a few states where coffee production happens the most. Southern states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka make up for biggest contributors of coffee production in India. Among other, north eastern states also take pride in growing coffee in some parts of theirs.
The history of coffee production in the country dates back to when the 16th-century Sufi saint Baba Budan brought “seven seeds” of “Mocha” coffee beans from Yemen, and planted them on “Baba Budan Giris” in Karnataka, giving way to the spread of coffee plantation.
