A Parliamentary Standing Committee is a committee consisting of Members of Parliament, which carry out a bulk of the functions of the Indian Parliament. They are permanent and regular committees constituted from time to time in accordance to the provisions of the Acts of the Parliament or Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business.
Both Houses of the Parliament - the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha - have similar committee structures with a few exceptions. Their appointment, terms of office, functions and procedures of conducting business are broadly similar.
The Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology is currently veteran Congress leader Shashi Tharoor. He has been an MP from Thiruvanathapuram, Kerala since 2009 and has also served as the Under-Secretary General of the United Nations. He also contested for the post in 2006.
He formerly served as Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs (2014 to 2019).
