For travel enthusiasts, it is important to note that despite the unending beauty of our world, there are certain places on Earth that are on the brink of getting disappeared. There is a term ‘Doom Tourism’ for such places. This is a recently developed trend of travelling to and exploring threatened destinations of the world.

Here’s a list of five such places that one should visit before they vanish:

1. The Amazon Rainforest, South Africa

The Amazon Rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world. It covers a huge area of 1.4 billion acres. The rainforest is so huge that almost half of it falls in Brazil. Almost 20% of the world’s bird species are found in the Amazon. However, there are high chances that in the coming 50 years, it might disappear. The reason behind its disappearance will be deforestation, global warming, mining, pollution, and so on.

2. Glacier National Park, United States

The name itself is enough to describe the beautiful place – a park full of glaciers. Notably, glaciers in beautiful parks of the United States are quickly diminishing. During the initial phases of this park, there were around 150 glaciers spread all over the place. However, it has come now down to only 25 glaciers. Scientists fear that by 2030, the place will be devoid of the glaciers. This place is a must visit as some of the rarest animals are found here like – elk, mountain goats, and grizzly bears.

3. Taj Mahal, India

Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world, is certainly on the verge of getting vanished in the coming decade. The magnificent structure, home to around 3-4 million tourists, might close it doors forever. The reasons attributed to its disappearance is the huge influx of tourists. Moreover, air pollution, river pollution and the decaying of the wood, which supports the structure, have also contributed in eroding it away. The marvellous white marbled structure is a must visit place for anyone and everyone.

4. Great Barrier Reef, Australia

The Great Barrier Reef, one of the most beautiful reef of the world is certainly a threatened place. Covering an area of 1680 miles, the turquoise blue water of this reef is home to some 1500 varieties of fish. However, what is daunting is that about 50% of the reef has already disappeared in past 27 years due to global warming and coral bleaching. According to scientists, it is being estimated that the Great Barrier Reef would be irreversibly damaged by the year 2030.

5. Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu, also known as – The Lost Country, – is located in the high altitudes of the Andes Mountains. It has certainly turned out to be a must-visit place for the travellers around the world. It is a magnificent place consisting of the 15th century Inca ruins, which have an earthy feel to it. Sadly, these ruins are being destroyed by the influx of visitors that climb and jump on the site’s structure. UNESCO has declared it as a World Heritage Site. For those who haven’t visited this place yet, make sure to visit it once but without ruining the ruins.
