From being a fragrant herb in smoothies to a vital ingredient in skincare products, ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb with ample benefits, according to Anushka Bhoj, a nutritionist and author at NDTV Food.

Also known as Indian ginseng, this herb dates back more than 3,000 years. Ashwagandha means ‘the smell of a horse’ in Sanskrit. Recent studies have shown ashwagandha being particularly beneficial for women. Here are five reasons for you to incorporate this herb in your diet.

1. An aphrodisiac

A natural way to boost libido, ashwagandha helps increase arousal and production of testosterone. In a medical study, women who consumed a daily dose of ashwagandha for over a month observed a significant increase in achieving peak sexual arousal.

2. De-stress

Belonging to a category of adaptogens, ashwagandha brings down stress levels by calming down the part of the brain that produces the stress hormone cortisol. A small dose of ashwagandha can help the body calm down during a stressful day or after an intense workout session.

3. Weight loss cure

Loaded with antioxidants, this herb can help accelerate metabolism, thus resulting in weight loss. Ashwagandha can also reduce blood sugar and triglycerides levels, the key culprits in excessive body fat and weight gain.

4. Reduces inflammation

Withanolide, an active ingredient in ashwagandha, can help reduce swelling and pain. It also has the ability to cure headaches, hypertension, arthritis, and joint pain.

5. Memory booster

Ashwagandha can also help boost memory and concentration levels. A recent study found out that those who consumed the herb demonstrated massive improvement in immediate and general memory compared to the placebo group. Ashwagandha can also help increase attention span.

Other benefits include regulating blood glucose levels, improving cardiac health, lowering cholesterol, and potentially treating cancer.

Despite its benefits, ashwagandha should be consumed in small amounts to avoid indigestion, nausea, and diarrhea. One can add small doses of the herb in coffee, juices, and water.
