Much like Ratha Yatra, Ganesh Chaturthi and Eid, Navratri celebrations in India have been hit due by the COVID-19 pandemic. With the state governments issuing various guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs) in each region, it is expected that one of the most awaited festivals of the season will be celebrated in a low-key manner.

However, this does not mean you cannot enjoy this festive season. With the right company of friends and family — be it physical or virtual — your Navratri can be as good as the old times.

The Gujarat government has banned all garba dance events, which are the biggest in the country. However, given how virtual events have made their place in society now, anyone can dress up and perform at video conference calls and make videos in the safe space of their homes. You can also easily connect with close ones who live abroad this way.

Since worshipping goddess Durga during the nine days is allowed in Gujarat, organisers have been asked to impose certain protocols such as not allowing devotees to touch the feet of the idols or photographs, maintaining social distance, and the mandatory use of masks. Although the state government had earlier banned the distribution of offerings, organisers can now do it by wrapping the prasad in plastic. However, you can also cook delicious dishes at your home, and offer it to the goddess as prasad. This will also provide a touch of uniqueness.

Garba, dandiya and all types of cultural programmes will not take place in Maharashtra as well. The Maharashtra government has advised organisers to host health-related camps or events such as blood donation camps instead of cultural events. So this year, mask up and go to a local health-related event so that you can help in saving someone’s live. What can be a better way than this to celebrate Navratri?

According to PTI, 7,000 pilgrims have been allowed per day from October 15 to visit to pay obeisance at the cave shrine of Vaishno Devi in the Trikuta hills of Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district. However, instead of being one among those 7,000 pilgrims, you can easily live steam the event on television channels with your family, and be safe together.

So this Navratri, blend the coronavirus guidelines with the joy of celebration, and stay safe at home with your family. Participating in virtual events with close ones, taking part in different games can cheer you up as well. Also, do not forget to click beautiful photographs of yourself in your Garba or Dandiya attire, because this year is unique in its own way.
