International Tea Day is celebrated every year on May 21 to increase the consumption of tea and understand the economic benefit. The first International Tea Day was observed on May 21, 2020.

In the year 2015, the government of India proposed to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization to expand International Tea Day across the world and only in the year 2019 United Nation decided to declare May 21 as International Tea Day.

Tea is the second most consumed beverage in the world after water. The basic purpose of the International Tea day is to highlight the economic importance of the tea and to promote better trade practice. Tea is not only important for economic purposes but also helpful in losing weight. It also helps in fighting major health issues like nausea and slow metabolism.

Earlier, December 15 was observed as International Tea Day by the major tea producing countries like India, Bangladesh, Srilanka, Nepal, Malaysia, Vietnam and Kenya. The very first International Tea Day in India was held in Delhi, 2005.
