All of us know at least one fitness freak whose life revolves around the gym, protein shakes, and dieting. While their fitness obsession can be a healthy motivation for those trying to be in shape, it is extremely unhealthy for people like us, who consider a walk from the bedroom to the kitchen or while attending a call, a workout routine. Now at this point, if someone tells you walking is not really an exercise, what would you do? Relax, we are not saying that. Yet. Let’s find out what experts have to say on this. (fingers crossed)

While health experts suggest that walking is a great way to keep your calories and weight in check, it is not really an exercise. Dr Manjunath Sukumaran, holistic health coach, chief facilitator, and founder of Harmony Wellness Concepts says walking is not an exercise or a full workout by itself.

According to Sukumaran, an ideal workout routine has three main steps- endurance training, resistance training, and flexibility. This means one must include a high-intensity exercise such as push-ups or jump roping to name a few along with some floor exercises and weight training.

Then why should we walk?

Though walking is not an intensive exercise to get you in your desired shape, there no going around the fact that it is one of the best ways to keep your heart, lungs and metabolism healthy. Especially in the COVID times, when our lungs are at the greatest risk, it is absolutely necessary to keep your lungs healthy.

According to experts, walking for over 25 to 30 minutes per day is an effective way to improve heart health and lung capacity.

While walking has its own set of benefits, it is important to combine it with some muscle exercises to improve blood sugar levels, aging process and muscle mass.
