Sharing an embrace is a kind gesture to express love and intimacy. According to psychotherapist Virginia Satir, a person needs four hugs per day for survival, eight hugs every day for their wellbeing, and 12 hugs per day for growth. As the world celebrates Hug Day today, here are five ways to hug it out with your lover, friends, and family.

1. Unexpected hug

Possibly one of the best kinds, unexpected hugs make a person feel loved, cherished, and cared for. Whether that’s hugging your parent while they’re in the kitchen, or turning a handshake into an embrace, hugs have the power to elevate mood levels and make a person smile.

2. Teddy bear hug

Teddy bear hugs are the ideal antidote to a hectic day. This hug is close and intimate and can last up to half a minute or more, depending on how stressed you are. After all, there is nothing like resting your head on someone’s chest after a long day.

3. Side hug

On Hug Day, no person should be left behind, even if it’s an acquaintance you met three days ago. A side hug is a friendly and cordial gesture that does not make things awkward, keeping an embrace sweet yet strictly platonic.

4. Back hug

When you see your partner frantically working on a laptop, hug them from behind to express your love and support. A peck on the cheek is an additional treat and can provide them assurance, support, and warmth.

5. Tight hug

Life is too short to share a lousy hug, so make sure your embrace exudes joy and liveliness. Whether it’s meeting a friend after a long time or finally reuniting with your partner after months, a tight embrace expresses your love and adoration for the person.

According to Healthline, hugs can alleviate stress, boost heart health, strengthen the immune system, and reduce anxiety.
